Now is Always Someone Elseby Levan MindiashviliCurated by Vanessa Kowalski

July 12 - 31, 2019Friday, July 12th 6-8 pm | Opening reception
Now is Always Someone Else: an experiment in curatorial and artistic collaboration, an exercise in decision making, a deconstructed instruction piece, a new way of working through the limitations imposed by distances, whether, metaphorical, physical or rooted in language. The presented work, newly configured by curator Vanessa Kowalski, employs the same material elements of a piece by Levan Mindiashvili previously arranged in an alternative format, originally commissioned for the 2019 BRIC Biennal with support from Erti Gallery, titled Here is Always Somewhere Else. Formally, the elements of the piece, presented in four different embodiments, are based on the word “here” in Georgian. Beside the installation hangs a single hyperlink, or a correlating tangent of the work, in which Kowalski’s handwritten rendition of the word ‘Now’ written from memory in Georgian lettering has been defined in liquid mirror.

BioBAT Artspace

Brooklyn Army Terminal Building A

140 58th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11220

Saturday 10/16, 12-5 pmSunday 10/17, 12-5 pm

BioBAT Art Space is pleased to present two exhibitions: Common Frequencies, an exhibition that brings together the works of Lorena Mal, Marcela Armas, Gilberto Esparza, Tania Candiani, and Interspecifics, and curated by Elisa Gutierrez Eriksen. The work of these Mexican artists meets at the intersection of art and science, and explores the relationship between these two disciplines through sound, urban ecology, language, and the construction of collective imageries. The artists—working across performance, installation, photography, sound, and drawing—are inspired by resonance, mechanics, electricity, and magnetism and take these phenomena as the basis for the invention of mechanisms that give voice to nature.
Impending Beauty, a solo exhibition by Tatiana Arocha at BioBAT Art Space Project Space, that transports viewers into a tea room that recalls early 19th Century European opulence, yet every surface bears images of an all-engulfing rainforest. The installation interrogates man’s instruments of aggression as well as those luxurious, ‘civilized’ artifacts and furnishings that hold so much material value but exist purely as a result of the heedless ransacking of natural resources. Within this room nature prevails, the flora and fauna recolonizing their sacred spaces.Concert: “Household Requiem”
Performances on Sunday 10/17 at 3 pm and 4pm
Household Requiem is a collaboration between Mexican artists Tania Candiani and composer Rogelio Sosa with the Grace Chorale Brooklyn, to be presented in the framework of the Common Frequencies Exhibition at BioBAT Art Space in Brooklyn. The presented piece was composed in response to the pandemic, and the lives that have been lost since 2020. It brings together the inner and external sounds of the lockdown in a composition about grief and unity.
